Fogle goes the distance, Turner plates game's only runs as Rollins sinks Tampa
WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Senior Tara Turner's two RBIs were the difference on Friday, as sixth-ranked Rollins shut out No. 11 Tampa in game one of a three-game series 2-0.
Featuring two of the nation's best pitchers, Tars' Niki Fogle, who came in with a record of 14-0 and a 0.60 ERA, pitched opposite Kayla Cox of the Spartans. Cox came into Friday 12-2 with an SSC-leading 0.22 ERA.
The teams combined for just nine hits and 14 strikeouts.
Fogle stranded a runner in each of the first two innings, heading to the bottom of the second in a scoreless tie.
In the second, the Tars tallied their first run of the night on a sac fly to deep left field by Turner. Fellow senior Hannah Lovestrand scored on the play to give Rollins the lead 1-0.
After a scoreless third from both teams, it was again Turner who provided the offense for the Tars in the fourth, blasting a Cox fastball over the left field fence for a solo home run to push the lead to 2-0.
Fogle allowed just one base runner the rest of the way, cruising to her 15th victory of the season. She gave up no runs on just five hits and struck out six in seven innings pitched.
Cox (12-3) suffered the loss, giving up the pair of runs on four hits in six innings of work.
Lovestrand recorded two of Rollins' four hits, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
