No. 11 Louisville jumps out to early lead, staves off pair of rallies to beat Iowa 6-4
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Katie Keller went 3-for-4 and Taner Fowler added three RBIs to lead No. 11 Louisville to a 6-4 win against Iowa on Tuesday at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cardinals struck early with a four-run first, added two in the fifth and then managed to stave off a hard-charging Hawkeyes team that scored four runs in the final two innings and left the bases loaded in the final inning.
The Cards jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first with four runs on three hits. Keller led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan Trimble. Alicja Wolny singled before Maggie Ruckenbrod reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Whitney Arion was hit by a pitch to send Keller home and keep the bases loaded. Fowler followed with a three-run double.
The Cards added two runs in fifth when Trimble reached on an error and Wolny walked. A passed ball sent Trimble to third and she scored on Ruckenbrod's single. Wolny crossed the plate when Arion reached on a fielder's choice.
The Hawkeyes struck in the sixth when Holly Hoffman and Kayla Massey both singled before Michelle Zoeller ripped a two-run triple. Caralisa Connell came in to relieve Cardinals starter Rachel Le Coq and struck out the next three batters to end the inning.
U of L staved off a Hawkeyes rally in the top of the seventh when Iowa loaded the bases on two Louisville errors and a walk. Leadoff batter Johnnie Dowling scored despite a close play at the plate before Sammi Gyerman drew a walk to plate Hoffman. Connell delivered a strikeout to end the game.
Le Coq (10-2) notched the win, going five innings, allowing four hits and striking out two. Connell came in and threw two innings of relief, striking out four and giving up two unearned runs.
Arion added a pair of RBI for the Cards, who move to 24-4 on the season. Iowa's Chelsea Lyon (8-4) took the loss. Zoeller was 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Hawkeyes (18-8) offensively.
