Mayo hits three-run double in seventh as Mount Union tops Capital for OAC title
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A four-run seventh inning propelled Mount Union to a 5-3 victory against Capital in the championship game of the Ohio Athletic Conference Softball Tournament on Saturday at Clowson Field.
The Purple Raiders won their second OAC tournament title (2008) and receives the OAC's automatic bid into the 2013 NCAA Division III championship. The Raiders will find out who their opponent is and where they will be playing at 10:00 a.m ET Monday during an online selection show on NCAA.com.
Rachel McAninch tossed a complete game in the victory and struck out two to earn her 16th victory of the season. She pitched Mount Union to all three of its tournament wins and was named to the OAC All-Tournament team.
Down 2-1 entering the top of the seventh, the first three Raiders reached base to load the bases. With two outs, Alex Mayo hit a three-run double to left field to give the Raiders a 4-2 lead.
Shelby Carmichael drove in Mayo with a single.
Lacey Romero homered for the Crusaders in the bottom of the seventh to make it 5-3 and got the tying run to the plate but McAninch slammed the door for the win.
Mount Union has won a season-high nine consecutive games and improved to 25-11 while regular-season champion Capital fell to 33-10.
Kristen Gromes, who scored two runs, and Marissa Earl, who threw out a runner at the plate from left field, were also named to the OAC All-Tournament team.
