BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Ashley Rhyne pitched a five-inning no-hitter in game two, and Kellie Beres drove in five runs to lead Gardner-Webb to a doubleheader sweep of South Carolina State on Wednesday afternoon at Varsity Field.

Gardner-Webb (10-17) scored seven early runs in Game 1, including six in the third inning, en route to a 7-1 win before shutting out South Carolina State (4-12) 10-0 behind Rhyne’s first no-hitter as a Runnin’ Bulldog. The Runnin’ Bulldogs tallied 22 hits in the twin-bill, including five extra-base hits, while batting .431 as a team and outscoring South Carolina State 17-1.

Beres and Samantha Meenaghan paced the Runnin’ Bulldogs with four hits each, as Savannah Burns and Taylar Pridgen both added three base knocks. Beres drove in a team-high five runs, while Mahaila Irvin and Scarlett Harris both recorded a home run and three RBIs.

Jessica Childers got the nod in Game 1, surrendering one run and striking out three to earn the victory. Rhyne took the ball in Game 2, tossing five scoreless innings while surrendering no hits, no walks and striking out one to complete her first no-hitter at Gardner-Webb.

Jasmine Greer and Jazmin Robinson each tallied two hits for South Carolina State, as Greer drove in the Bulldogs’ lone run of the day.

Vianney Gomez made the start in Game 1, surrendering six earned runs on 11 hits and striking out three. Robinson and Jareece Sayles combined for eight earned runs on 11 hits in Game 2, totaling four innings of work.
