CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — North Carolina continued its excellent performance on Sunday at the Virginia Tech Invitational as for the second day in a row UNC won six individual event titles, giving the Tar Heels victories in 12 of the 26 individual events overall in the two-day invitational at the Christiansburg Aquatics Center.
Freshman Brian Bollerman won two individual events on Sunday, giving him three titles in the meet while freshman John Paul Gaylor and sophomore Kyle Ficker each one their second events of the invitational.
Ficker won his second event of the meet when he sped to victory in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 44.77 seconds. He was almost a full second faster than his previous career best time of 45.74 seconds. Freshman Brian McClintock finished fourth in the event.
Brian Bollerman won his second event of the meet with a victory in the 200-yard breaststrroke, setting a pool record in the process. Bollerman went 2:00.54 breaking the previous school record of 2:01.59 set by Taylor Grey of Virginia on January 11, 2012. Bollerman was more than three seconds faster than his previous career best of 2:03.55. Sophomore Walker Knop finished third in a career best time of 2:04.08.
Freshman Clifton Gordon led the Tar Heel efforts in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:46.72 to finish second in the event. He broke his previous personal best of 1:48.74 at last November’s Nike Cup. Bryce Mendes finished fifth in a career best 1:52.35 and junior Mike Mohr was the consolation final in 1:52.87.
The 200-yard individual medley resulted in Bollerman’s third championship of the meet as he clocked a 1:50.73. Walker Knop finished third in 1:53.46 and Bryce Mendes was seventh in 1:56.73. Bollerman’s previous career best was 1:52.29 while Mendes also went a career best as his previous top time was 1:58.87.
