Kansas dominates four-team field
Jayhawks earned victories in 11 of 12 events
KEY LARGO, Fla. -- Returning to competition for the first time in a month, senior Iuliia Kuzhil and sophomore Monica Johannessen each won two events as Kansas cruised to the title at the Orange Bowl Classic Tuesday in Key Largo, Fla. The Jayhawks won 11 of 12 events as they totaled 297.5 points. George Mason (87 points) finished in second while Vermont (68.5 points) and Florida International (65 points) rounded out the field.
Kuzhil took to the top spot in the 100-meter backstroke (1:04.06) and the 50-meter backstroke (29.49). She also swam the first leg of the 200-meter medley relay, which took first with a time of 2:00.44.
Johannessen added to the Jayhawks' haul by placing first in the 50-meter butterfly (28.67) and the 100-meter freestyle (57.37). She came back to lead the first leg of the winning 200-meter freestyle relay (1:49.45).
Other Jayhawk winners included: freshman Morgan Sharp in the 400-meter freestyle (4:21.47), junior Kath Liggett in the 100-meter butterfly (1:04.89), freshman Alison Lusk in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:14.55) and senior Amanda Maez in the 50-meter freestyle (27.05). Junior Stephanie Payne rounded out the winning effort by grabbing first place in the 200-meter IM (2:20.99).
