CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's swimming and diving team will host the State Farm/Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 12-14.
This marks the 15th year the Salukis will host the conference championships, welcoming Evansville, Illinois State, Missouri State, and Northern Iowa. Missouri State enters the meet as the defending champions.
The Salukis are 4-1 in dual competition heading into this weekend's action. The women have defeated New Orleans and Missouri State this season, as well as two wins against Evansville. Therese Mattsson has entered the record books four times this year, most notably moving to the No. 2 spot in both the 100 free (50.59) and 200 free (1:48.85). In addition, the Salukis have garnered five weekly MVC honors including four Swimmer of the Week awards and one Diver of the Week.
Head coach Rick Walker is positive about the team's preparation for this weekend. The Salukis last won the MVC Championships in 2007 and are looking for a repeat this year.
"We've been diligent in the areas we have control," Walker said. "Now it comes down to those things combined with things in which we do not have control over. We'll just wait for the outcome."
