Washington & Jefferson Sets Numerous Records

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs had numerous record-breaking performances this past weekend at the 2009 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships at Grove City College.
The Presidents’ teams combined to set 16 team records, two conference records and had three conference champions. Washington & Jefferson swimmers also had seven NCAA Division III Championship qualifying times, including three by three-time PAC Champion sophomore Brandon Smith (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny).
Individual school records eclipsed at the event included: freshman Wade Blom (New Hope, Pa./Bolles School) in the 100 fly (51.10), senior Brittany Bertoli (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) in the 200 fly (2:10.13), freshman Michael Boutwell (Winchester, Va./John Handley) in the 500 free (4:39.67), freshman Benjamin Daggett (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) in both the 1,000 free (10:01.11) and 1,650 free (16:32.68), freshman Bethany Haver (Akron, Ohio/Harvey S. Firestone) in the one meter dive (415.60 points), Smith in the 200 back (1:53.09), 200 IM (1:55.11) and 400 IM (4:08.77) and freshman diver Justin Weifenbach (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) in both the one meter (401.20 points) and three meter (400.00 points) diving events.
Smith and Haver won PAC titles and set new conference records in the 200 back and one meter dive, respectively, while Bertoli brought home W&J’s the third and final individual PAC title in the 200 fly.
The Presidents’ men also excelled in the relay events as the 200 free (1:26.43), 200 medley (1:36.61) and 400 medley (3:33.89) teams all set school records at the three-day event. Members of the 200 free relay team included freshman Andy Rish (North East, Pa./Cathedral Prep), sophomore Christian Larson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills), junior Mark Sirkoch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) and Smith.
Blom, Rish, Sirkoch and Smith teamed up to break the 400 medley record, while junior Dan Martin (Arendtsville, Pa./Biglerville), Blom, Rish and Sirkoch claimed the 200 medley record.
Four W&J athletes also posted NCAA qualifying marks, including Blom (100 fly), Haver (one meter & three meter dives), Smith (200 IM, 400 IM and 200 Back), and freshman Brittany Vogel (Butler, Pa./Butler) (200 IM).
