Middlebury Cruises Into Semis, Downs N.C. Wesleyan

OBERLIN, Ohio - Middlebury advanced to the NCAA semifinal for the seventh time in eight years with a 5-0 win over N.C. Wesleyan. The Panthers advance to take on Washington-St. Louis, a 5-0 winner over Carnegie Mellon, in the semifinals on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Matches are being played at Oberlin College in Ohio.
Middlebury improved to 21-2 with the win, while 11th ranked N.C. Wesleyan fell to 18-2 overall. The Panthers jumped out quickly, taking a 3-0 advantage after doubles play. Eliot Jia and Conrad Olson gave Middlebury its first point with an 8-3 win over Artsiom Prostak and Marcelo Prata at #2 doubles. Chris Mason and Andrew Peters won an 8-5 match over Alexey Rumyantsev and Clayton Sonn at #3, before Andrew Thomson and Andrew Lee capped the sweep with an 8-3 win over Anton Filonov and Ramon Garcia at #1.
The match ended quickly in singles play, as Jia quickly dispatched of Sonn at #5, 6-0, 6-0 to make it a 4-0 lead. Peter Odell sealed the victory in the sixth slot, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win over Prata. The Panthers had taken the first set in the other four singles matches, with Thomson nearing victory at #4, 6-4, 5-0.
