COLUMBUS, Ohio - No. 4 Ohio State completed a doubleheader sweep by downing Xavier 7-0 Wednesday evening at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. With the victory, the Buckeyes (2-0) move to 10-0 all-time against the Musketeers (0-2). Earlier in the day, Ohio State defeated Butler 7-0 in the first match of the annual opening-day meeting with the two teams.
In doubles competition, Ohio State junior Devin McCarthy and senior Balazs Novak started the Buckeyes on a fast note, jumping out to a 6-0 lead en route to an 8-1 win against Xavier's Philip Diaz and Marc Pretorious. Peter Kobelt and Nelson Vick earned the Scarlet and Gray their first point of the match after defeating the Butler tandem of Jimmy Roebker and Brandon MacDonald.
Concluding doubles play, Ohio State's No. 6 duo of Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola defeated Bobby Deye and Brian Starr 8-2.
In singles action, four Buckeyes jumped out to early 3-0 leads in the initial set. Freshman Ille Van Engelen was the first Buckeye to claim victory after defeating Xavier's Mesa Mei 6-0, 6-1. In his first day of competition, Van Engelen was a perfect 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles play.
Buchanan, ranked No. 63 in the nation, handed Deye a straight-set 6-0, 6-1 loss. Novak ended his night with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Patrick Bandy. Rola, the seventh-ranked singles player in the nation, continued his unblemished start after beating Roebker.
Redshirt-freshman Nelson Vick, who won the 2010 Big Ten Indoor Singles Championship in October, extended his current singles winning streak to eight matches by downing Starr 6-3, 6-2.
Kobelt rounded out singles play with a straight-set 6-2, 6-4 victory.
