FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion  junior Dirk Birk captured a three-set win at the No. 5 singles position to complete a marathon comeback for the 14th-ranked Patriots that resulted in a 5-4 victory against 39th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 6) in season-opening men's tennis action.

Nationally-ranked Jitka Gavdunova.and Mona Blauen combined for three points at the top to help lead the 13th-ranked FMU women to a 6-3 win against the 44th-ranked Queens women.

In the men's match, the Patriots trailed 4-1 after the first two singles matches were completed. However, third-ranked Oshada Wijemanne won at No.1 singles, Tanguy Montoisy won at No. 4, Mickey Poirier won at No. 6, and finally Bair at No. 5. All of those wins were in three sets as the match took nearly six hours to complete.
