No. 8 W. Florida wins top-10 battle
Argos win five singles and two doubles points in rout

PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 8 West Florida (1-0) opened its spring season with a 7-2 victory against No. 7 Florida Southern (1-1) at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex. UWF won two doubles matches and five singles matches to seal the victory.
At No. 1 doubles, Leandro Ferreira teamed with Andrey Pozhidaev to defeat Ivan Marevic and Brian deMontfort of Florida Southern 8-4. UWF also won at the No. 2 position with freshman Domenico Sano and junior transfer Jose Carlos Tolentino defeating Benoit Paradis and C.J. Johnson 8-2.
West Florida then fell at the No. 3 spot, with juniors Sean Gunnels and Mike Lue dropping their match against Jorge Gutierrez and Nathan Leavitt 8-3.
UWF took a 2-1 lead into singles action. The Argo men secured victories at five of the six singles positions to take the match.
Pozhidaev, who is currently ranked No. 20 in the nation, defeated Marevic in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 line. No. 15-ranked Ferreira defeated deMontfort 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2.
Tolentino recorded his first singles victory as an Argonaut after Johnson retired in the second set. Lue followed with a defeat of Gutierrez 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot while Sano also picked up his first UWF singles victory, as he recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win against Leavitt at No. 6.
Florida Southern recorded its only singles point with a 6-7, 6-4, 10-8 victory by Paradis against Gunnels at the No. 3 position.
