SAVANNAH, Ga. – No. 3 Armstrong Atlantic State opened Peach Belt Conference play with a 9-0 victory against 12th-ranked Georgia College on Sunday afternoon at Bacon Park.
The Pirates (3-0, 1-0 PBC) won all six singles matches in straight sets in handing Georgia College (5-1, 1-1 PBC) its first loss of the 2011 dual match season.
Armstrong began the match by sweeping all three doubles matches.
The top-ranked duo of Rafael Array and Mikk Irdoja defeated Jerome Leborgne and Johan Wadstein 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, while the eighth-ranked duo of Eudaldo Bonet and Daniel Regan collected an 8-3 win against Leo Bernardes and Tyler Franks at No. 2 doubles. 20th-ranked Matus Mydla and Pedro Scocuglia completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win against Robert Angelucci and Tobias Rausch at No. 3 doubles.
Second-ranked Bonet defeated Wadstein at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1 to start the singles sweep. Fourth-ranked Irdoja outdueled No. 16-ranked Leborgne 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while No. 13 Array bested Bernardes 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3 slot.
Regan, ranked No. 21, beat Rausch 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 4 position, while 30th-ranked Mydla downed Franks 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Scocuglia used a first-set tiebreak to win against Wictor Andersson 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the final No. 6 slot.
