ATHENS, Ga. — No. 13 Georgia defeated No. 21 Auburn, 4-0 at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts to get their first SEC win of the season.
In doubles, the Bulldogs took an early lead with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. At No. 1 the No. 6 ranked pair of Javier Garrapiz and Hernus Pieters gave Georgia a victory against No. 23 ranked Daniel Cochrane and Tim Puetz, 8-3. At No. 2, No. 36 Sadio Doumbia and Ignacio Taboada took an 8-4 win against No. 46 Alex Stamchev and Andreas Mies to clinch the doubles point.
No. 3 doubles was suspended with No. 79 Drake Bernstein and Wil Spencer leading Auburn’s Lucas Lopasso and Rafael Rondino, 8-7.
“I’m really happy with our start, said head coach Manuel Diaz. “It’s the SEC regular season and I thought we played well. Auburn is a really good team. They kept it close everywhere, in doubles and singles, but I thought we played hard and that’s what got us this win.”
In singles, Georgia extended their lead with Bernstein defeating Auburn’s Cochrane 6-3, 6-1. The Bulldogs continued their success with No. 37 Doumbia defeating No. 104 Stamchev 6-4, 6-1.
Georgia clinched at No. 2 as No. 15 Spencer defeated Auburn’s Tim Hewitt 6-3, 6-4. Spencer’s win gives him his second clincher of the year and improves him to a 6-1 record when playing at No.2.
Georgia is now 47-4 all-time versus Auburn.
