Ithaca topples Wheaton (Mass.)
Bombers start strong with doubles sweep to start rout
Hilton Head, S.C. -- Ithaca defeated Wheaton (Mass.) by an 8-1 advantage on Monday in South Carolina in a matchup of regionally ranked teams. Both teams are ranked in the top 20 in the region as the Bombers are No. 13 and Wheat is No. 20 in the Northeast region.
Senior Josh Rifkin was victorious at No. 1 singles and teamed with junior Jimmy Newton to win at No. 1 doubles for the Bombers (1-1). Rifkin, ranked 43rd nationally in singles, was a 6-1, 6-0 winner and Ithaca's top doubles team won 9-8 with a 7-5 victory in the decisive tiebreak.
Ithaca took three other singles matches in straight sets and saw only one setback as Griffin Reid fell in a tight 7-5, 7-5 contest against Harry Altman. The Bombers' No. 2 and 3 doubles teams also won, easing by Wheaton's tandems by 8-5 and 8-4 scores, respectively.
