PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 5 West Florida fell to Oklahoma Christian 5-4 Sunday at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex. UWF (12-8, 2-1 GSC) is a NCAA Division II participant, while Oklahoma Christian is in the NAIA and is ranked sixth at that level. 

UWF has lost three straight matches despite tallying victories at all three doubles positions.

Leandro Ferreira and Andrey Pozhidaev defeated Martin Poboril and Pier Pieracciani 9-8 at the No. 1 line and Sean Gunnels and Domenico Sano defeated Renardy Guelfi and Thomas Van Cauter 8-4 in the second flight. Argonauts Lukas Larsson and Mike Lue defeated Esteban Flores and Bruno Tiberti 8-4 at the No. 3 position to make a strong impression heading into singles play.

UWF’s only singles victory came at the No. 4 position, where Lue defeated Guelfi 6-3, 6-3.

Van Cauter, the No. 3-ranked singles player in the NAIA, defeated Ferreira 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 at the No. 1 slot. Ferreira is the No. 15-ranked player in Division II.

At No. 2, Poboril defeated 20th-ranked Pozhidaev 7-6, 6-3. Poboril is currently ranked No. 25 in the NAIA.

Tiberti defeated Gunnels 6-0, 7-5, at No. 3 while at No. 5, Flores defeated Sano in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Pieracciani knocked off UWF freshman Guilherme Canineo 6-2, 7-6 at the No. 6 position to complete the upset.
