Mary Washington captures CAC title
Eagles win 12th consecutive conference crown
No. 25 Mary Washington overcame a 2-1 deficit after doubles to defeat Salisbury 5-4 on Thursday in the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Championship. The Eagles, winners of their 12th consecutive CAC title, improve to 16-10 on the year and will advance to the NCAA Tournament next month.
The Eagles were victorious in the first doubles match of the day at court three but then fell on courts one and two fo face a deficit going into singles play. UMW won three consecutive singles matches, by Kevin Aquino at the six position, Kaz Murata at two, and Riley Baver at five to come one point from victory. Salisbury then won at the three position to cut the deficit to 4-3, but sophomore Will Apperson overcame a shaky start at four for a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 win to clinch the title.
