OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Abilene Christian picked up its third consecutive Lone Star Conference title since 2008 as it earned a hard earned 5-1 win against Cameron in the conference championship match at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
ACU picked up its 12th LSC title all-time and earned the league’s automatic bid in the South Central Region tournament next month.
Three close matches in doubles action gave ACU a 2-1 lead heading into singles play after morning rain pushed the day’s matches into the afternoon. The Wildcats picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles with Hans Hach and Jake Hendrie taking a 9-7 win at No. 1 while Nick Plum and Alredo Desiati squeezed out a 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles.
The three singles matches ACU need to pull out the victory came at Nos. 2, 4 and 6 singles. No. 4 singles saw Desiati pick up a 6-4, 7-6 win against Nicolas Clerc, who was dealt his first singles loss of the year.
Eldad Campbell also picked up a close win by a 7-6, 6-3 mark at No. 2 singles while Bryan Joiner earned the easiest match with a 6-1, 6-3 win.
The Wildcats are currently No. 2 in the South Central Region ranked behind No. 1 St. Edward’s. SEU knocked off the Wildcats in March to claim the top spot in the region. The final regular-season rankings on May 4 will determine the regional hosts.
