Valdosta St. sweeps past St. Edwards
Blazers cruise past Hilltoppers, into national semifinals
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – No. 2 Valdosta State (18-1) earned their way into the semifinals of the 2011 NCAA Division II Tennis Championships as they shut out No. 15 St. Edward’s 5-0 Thursday morning from Sanlando Park.
Although fairly competitive on the doubles side, Valdosta managed a sweep of the Hilltoppers before downing St. Edward’s in the first two singles opportunities.
At doubles, the Blazers second-ranked pair of Philip Pakerbusch and Luis Loeffler defeated Pedro Bronstrup and Ryan Wiggins in convincing fashion 8-3. Valdosta collected their second point at the top flight spot position as the No. 12 pair of Daniel Dueren and Christian Hansen turned back the 17th-ranked tandem of Ned Boone and Mick Walter 8-5. In a hotly contested matchup at No. 3 doubles, the Blazers proved superior again as Bernhard Wallner and Konstantine Kutschenko edged the St. Edward’s duo of Alexandre Bueno and James Rogers 8-6.
In singles, No. 19 Dueren pushed the Blazers to their fourth point as he took down Mick Walter in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Valdosta secured the match at the No .4 spot as Luis Loeffler upended Bronstrup 6-4, 6-2.
The loss eliminates St. Edward’s from the NCAA Tournament.
