ST. PETER, MInn. -- Carthage College advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a convincing 5-0 win over the University of Chicago at the Central Regional in St. Peter, Minnesota on Friday afternoon. The Redmen jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Dane Schmidgall and Brad Livingston defeated Ward Bortz and Sasha Deriy 8-6 at the #1 position, and Tommy Collins and Alex Donker defeated Bharath Sithian and Andrew McKay 8-1 at the #3 position. The #2 doubles match was halted after the doubles point had been determined. Zach Newhouse and Tres Heimann of Carthage were leading Joe Tchan and Jacob Reckess of Chicago 6-5 when the match was stopped.

In singles play, Carthage extended its lead to 2-0 when Tres Heiman defeated Jacob Reckess at the #5 position 6-1, 6-1. The Redmen then closed out the match when Dan Schmidgall defeated Ward Bortz 6-4, 6-0 at #1, and Alex Donkor defeated Vivek Venkataraman 6-3, 6-3 at #3. The final point for Carthage was picked up when Brad Livingston defeated Sasha Deriy 7-6 (4), 6-2. The #4 and #6 singles matches were stopped once the match had been decided. At #4, Zach Newhouse of Carthage was leading Joseph Chan 6-3, 3-1, while at #6 Tommy Collins of Carthage had picked up the first set against Bharath Sithian 6-2, but was trailing in the second set 3-1.
