ST. CLOUD, MINN. -- The St. Cloud State men's tennis team (22-3) ended its season on Saturday, May 7 with a 5-2 setback against Nebraska-Kearney (16-4) in second round play of the 2005 NCAA Division II North Central Regional Tournament in St. Cloud. UNK will now advance to the NCAA Division II championships, which will be held next in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

UNK gained an early 2-1 lead after doubles play in the match. At number one doubles William Jacombe and Jorge Ramos posted an 8-2 win over SCSU's Tony Larson and Joey Jachymowski. At number two doubles, Titus Christianson and Jeff Horner of SCSU charged back with an 8-6 win over Andres Espinosa and Tyson Thomas of UNK. At third doubles, UNK gained an early edge with an 8-4 win by Cory Ciccone and Nate Weigand over SCSU's Dan Boulay and Michael Engdahl.

In singles play, Jacombe charted a 6-2, 6-0 win over SCSU's Larson at number one singles. At number two singles, Christianson responded with a 6-3, 6-1 win for the Huskies over UNK's Espinosa. At fourth singles, Ramos chalked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over SCSU's Travis Marohl. The match was ended when Weigand posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over SCSU's Engdahl at number three singles. With five match wins at hand, UNK gained the 5-2 overall win.

This marked the fifth consecutive season that SCSU has received an NCAA tournament bid, and it also marked the first time that SCSU has advanced past first round play. On May 6, the Huskies gained a win over CU-Colorado Springs to advance in tournament play.
