ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.-The #3 Lynn University men's tennis team fell to #10 Drury by the score of 5-0 in its Round of 16 match at the NCAA Division II National Championships. The Fighting Knights (17-6) were held scoreless for just the first time this season by the Panthers (21-2) in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Junior Jan Macko and graduate student Eduardo Morones, the second-ranked duo in the nation, were upset by the 15th-ranked pair of Matias Oddone and Igor Fejzula by the score of 8-4 at the top spot. At the second spot in the lineup, sophomore Regnier Azevedo and Aivarus Balzekas fell to Dante Bottini and Krisztian Kaplan by the score of 8-5 as sophomore Dennis Riegraf and freshman Dennis Verduin fell 8-4 to Omar Laalej and Marcus Akesson at the third spot.
Battling on the singles courts, the Knights tried to fight back into the match but Drury picked up their final two points at the first and fifth singles positions. In a battle of the two of the top-10 singles players in the nation, seventh-ranked Balzekas fell to sixth-ranked Oddone by the score of 6-1, 6-3 at the top singles spot. In the deciding match for the team victory, Laalej downed Riegraf 6-4, 6-4 at the fifth position.
Drury advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals tomorrow against the winner of the West Florida/Ferris State opening round match. The quarterfinal battle is set for 10 a.m.
