SEATTLE, Wash. The 12th-ranked Husky men's tennis team is off and running in the NCAA Championships, as they breezed by Oral Roberts, 4-0, in the first round dual match at Bill Quillian Stadium. Washington (19-4) advances to face the 21st-ranked USC Trojans tomorrow, May 14, at 2 p.m. with the winner advancing onto the Round of 16 in College Station, Texas. Today, the 15th-seeded Huskies got the early doubles point and then finished off the Golden Eagles with three quick singles wins.
Sixth-ranked senior Alex Vlaski clinched the win for the Huskies, defeating Oral Roberts' Wessel Kemp, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. All remaining matches were suspended once Washington earned the clinching fourth point, with UW up a set in each case.
Washington improved to 16-7 on the year in the doubles point, as they took the second and third matches for the early 1-0 lead. Vlaski and senior Christoph Palmanshofer were 8-2 winners at second doubles. Sophomore Mike Ricks and freshman Andy Kuharszky then posted an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles to secure the point. Ricks also saw action today in singles, where he moved to 4-0 on the year in dual play via a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Adam Ehrlich. Sophomore Alex Slovic clocked in the fastest match time, defeating Cuan Farquharson at third singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Husky Head Coach Matt Anger was pleased with the one but already looking ahead to tomorrow's showdown with Pac-10 rival USC.
"What's fun about the tournament is that you're very happy but in the back of your mind you're immediately thinking about the next round, and for us that's tomorrow," Anger said. "So we're onto that one now. I was happy with how we got going in doubles, after it took us maybe the first game to get going. Other than that I thought it was pretty good, so hopefully we can do the same tomorrow."
The Huskies and Trojans met once already this season, with Washington pulling out a 4-3 nailbiter in Los Angeles. Five of the six singles matches went three sets in that encounter. It was only the second win all-time for Washington over USC.
The Huskies have now won five straight NCAA First Round matches, their last loss coming in 2000.
