TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The Samford men’s tennis team squared off against its highest-ranked opponent of the 2009 dual-match season Sunday and was defeated 7-0 on the road versus the 19th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. The in-state contest was held at the UA Tennis Stadium.

 

With the loss, Samford (0-4) dropped its fifth-straight decision against Alabama (5-1). The Bulldogs will next be in action Saturday at 9 a.m., as they begin competition in the Auburn Spring Showdown versus Columbus State. Samford is also scheduled to meet UCF on Saturday at 2 p.m.

 

In Sunday’s matchup against Alabama, Samford’s Carl Abalos nearly picked up an upset victory over the Crimson Tide’s John Lewis in singles play.

 

On court No. 5, the Bulldogs’ sophomore from Woodstock, Ga., earned a 6-4 win in the first set, but Lewis rallied back to hold on for a 10-5 victory in the third-set super-tiebreaker. The final score of Abalos’ match on court No. 5 was 4-6, 7-6 (2), 1-0 (5).
