ABILENE -- The script couldn't have played out any better for the ACU Wildcats and their only two seniors Friday afternoon at the Eager Tennis Center.
With the Wildcats trailing Incarnate Word, 4-3, in the championship match of the NCAA Division II South Central Region Men's Tennis Championship Tournament, Brett Proctor and Luke Hawk found themselves still on the court in the final two matches of the day with a berth to the NCAA Division II national tournament on the line.
Proctor won his match first, taking out Carlos Olvera, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, to even the match at 4-4. That left it up to Hawk, a four-year letterwinner who is the third Hawk sibling from Clyde to pass through head coach Hutton Jones' ACU tennis program.
Hawk and Alex Wieland battled through two sets with each winning one before heading to a third set in front of a growing crowd. With cheers or groans going up on each point, it was Hawk who outlasted Wieland, 7-5 in the third set, to give the Wildcats the 5-4 match win and punched their ticket to their fourth straight national tournament appearance.
When Wieland's return volley went long, Hawk's ACU teammates converged on him and celebrated with him before he was sent straight to the training room to sit in the cold tub after more than five hours on the court.
"I'm not about writing scripts," Jones joked aferward, "because my script called for us to be up 3-0 or 2-1 after doubles instead of down 2-1. But all year long we've tried to take whatever position we're in and find a reason to make something good happen.
"For those two guys (Proctor and Hawk) to have been on the court to decide the match was good stuff," Jones said. "Even though we were down, I had an amazing amount of confidence that we could still get it done."
The win sends the Wildcats to the national tournament for the 12th time overall, fourth straight time and seventh time since 2001. ACU will begin play in the tournament on Wednesday, May 12, with a tough draw as the Wildcats take on No. 6 Hawaii Pacific (19-2) at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
