The Carthage College men's tennis team (16-8) opened play in the NCAA Division III Mens Tennis Championship on Friday, May 14 with a 5-4 win over Grinnell College (22-6) at the Washington University (Mo.) Tao Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo.

Carthage advances to play Washington (Mo., 17-4) in a second-round match on Saturday, May 15, at 10 a.m. The Bears were ranked seventh in the April 29 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's NCAA Division III poll. On the other side of the bracket, Luther College (33-8) takes on Westminster College (Mo., 14-2) in a first-round contest, with the winner playing No. 20 Kalamazoo College (20-5). Carthage is making its eighth-straight NCAA appearance in 2010.

In the Red Men's win over Grinnell, Carthage's Jack Schiro (Sr., Shorewood, Wis., 16-5) lost to Grinnell's Juan Carlos Perez at number-one singles, Perez winning, 6-3, 6-3. Sammy Ramoni (Sr., Honiara, Solomon Islands, 22-8) defeated Dmitriy Glumov at number-two singles, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6. Jeffery Lotz Jr. (Fr., Racine, Wis./Horlick, 19-11) was a winner at number-three singles, as was Matt Whiteside (So., Sacramento, Calif., Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep, 19-7) at number-four singles and J.T. Delk (Sr., Wheaton, Ill./North, 17-9) at number-five singles. Chris Vargo (Fr., Elmhurst, Ill./York, 6-5) lost at number-six singles.

Carthage's number-one doubles team of Ramoni and Lotz (11-8) and the Red Men's number-two team of Schiro and Schwenke (7-9) both lost to Grinnell, while Carthage's number-three team of Delk and Whiteside (14-6) was a winner.
