AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College men's tennis team advanced to tomorrow afternoon's NCAA Regional Championship final with a rare 6-0 tournament win over St. Joseph's of Long Island today. After receiving an opening round bye, and today's win, only a match at 1 p.m. tomorrow stands between the Lord Jeffs and a return to the National Quarterfinals.

In doubles play, Amherst was able to win all three matches to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the singles action. The pairing of Moritz Koenig (Hamburg, Germany) and Mark Kahan (Unionville, CT) quickly dispatched of Kyle Barnett and John Funk for the first point, before Wes Waterman (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) and Sean Doerfler (Douglaston, NY) picked up an 8-4 win at number three.

Completing the sweep was a win from Austin Chafetz (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) and Robby Sorrel (Scarsdale, NY) with an 8-3 win at number one. Falling at number one doubles from St. Joseph's was Erik Forsythe, the younger brother of Amherst head coach Chris Garner. The match marked the first time Garner has had to coach against Forsythe.

In singles action, Amherst moved to a 4-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win at number four by Waterman over Nick Donadio. The match was clinched in a rare fashion, with two bouts winning at the exact same moment. Earning the clinching point at the exact same moment were Koenig and Priit Gross (Tartu, Estonia) at number three and six. Gross won by a score of 6-1, 6-0, while Koenig did not surrender a single game. With the decision clinched, play was called to a halt on the three remaining courts. In each match, Amherst had won the first set comfortably and held a lead in the second set.

St. Joseph's tournament run comes to an end, but not before winning the first NCAA Tournament match in program history in yesterday's First Round. Amherst will await the winner of this morning's match between Williams and St. Lawrence University.
