Seniors Michael Greenberg (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) and William VandenBerg (Milwaukee, WI/University School) provided Kenyon's decisive singles victories in a 5-0 victory over the host University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks (22-10).
After the Lords (20-6) cruised to a 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles play, Greenberg put the team on the brink of victory with a 6-3, 6-1 decision at first singles. VandenBerg then sealed the win by picking up a 6-0, 6-2 victory, the 81st of his career. Greenberg sits right behind him in the record books with 79 wins.
Both players had a hand in Kenyon's successful romp through the doubles matches as well. Greenberg and senior Charles Brody (Washington, DC/Sidwell Friends) chalked up an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. Not only did that decision get the Lords started on the right foot, but it also tied Brody with Mike Herrick '05 for the most career doubles victories (78) in program history.
VandenBerg teamed with freshman Paul Burgin (Baltimore, MD/Pikesville) to take third doubles, 8-3, and run their season mark to 16-1. Senior Tomas Piskacek (Sestajovice, Czech./Gymnazium Spitalska) and junior Jeremy Polster (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) were 8-4 victors at No. 2 doubles.
Up next for the Lords is a regional-final showdown against Trinity (TX) University, the 13th-ranked team in the country. The Tigers advanced to meet No. 9 Kenyon courtesy of a 5-0 win over Carleton College on Saturday. The Sweet 16 match-up begins Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (ET) at UW-Whitewater's Wangerin Courts.
