ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The top-ranked Valdosta State Blazers men's tennis team upended the No. 19-ranked Abilene Christian 5-1, Thursday morning in quarterfinal action of the 2010 Men's Tennis National Championships, from the Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The win secures the Blazers a spot in the semifinals, while Abilene Christian is eliminated from the tournament.
In their efforts to becoming 21-1 in 2010, the Blazers began their afternoon by taking two-of-three doubles matches. VSU quickly took to a 2-0 lead on the backs of doubles combos Pakebusch/Kuech and Dueren/Hansen. Pakebusch and Kuech took down the Wildcats' pair of Hawk and Joiner by the score 8-2 and was immediately followed by an 8-1 decision by Dueren and Hansen in the No. 2 spot. Abilene did crack the armor of the Blazers, as Brett Proctor and Alfredo Desiati outlasted Lenhart and Sickman, 8-6.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they could not extend the momentum from their doubles win into singles as Valdosta State took all three singles matches. Dueren registered the first point of singles with an impressive 6-0, 6-2 win over Strahl. Kuech pushed it to 4-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 triumphant at No. 6, and Kutschenko delivered the fifth and decisive point with a 6-1, 6-1 straight sets win over Joiner in the No. 5 slot.
With the match secured, the remaining contests went unfinished.
The Blazers will now take on No.10-ranked Columbus State on Friday, May 14 in NCAA Semifinals action. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
