No. 7 Cal Lutheran topples Brandeis
Kingsmen win five of six singles points, all in straight sets
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Brandeis, ranked No. 30 in Division III, suffered its first setback of the season in a 6-3 loss to No. 7 Cal Lutheran.
The Judges had the early edge in the contest after taking two of three doubles matches.
Seniors Simon Miller and Nick White, ranked 17th as a tandem, gave the visitors the edge headed into singles play with a late break to earn a 9-7 victory at No. 1. Senior Ezra Bernstein and sophomore Josh Jordan earned the first point of the match for Brandeis at No. 3 doubles with an easy 8-2 triumph.
Singles action went primarily the way of the Kingsmen.
Jordan, playing at No. 6, earned a 6-4, 7-5, victory to become a double winner on the day, but the rest of the lineup fell in straight sets. White pushed Nick Ballou, the No. 3 player in the nation, at No. 2 singles but ended up falling 6-4, 6-3. Miller hung tough in the first set with No. 19-ranked Andrew Guiffrida at No. 1 singles before falling 6-4, 6-1.
