Abilene Christian sweeps Shaw
Wildcats drop just four points in singles matches to move on
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Abilene Christian blanked 48th-ranked Shaw 5-0 in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Championships on Wednesday.
The win sent the sixth-ranked Wildcats into the quarterfinals where they will challenge defending national champion Barry University, a 5-4 first-round winner against No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic State.
Sweeping all three doubles contests, the Wildcats surrendered just four points in singles play to advance.
In doubles, ACU registered three convincing victories, including two shutouts.
The No. 6 doubles pair of Hans Hach and Jake Hendrie blanked Gabriel Nicotra and Ataide Suca 8-0 while Nick Plum and Alfredo Desiati also registered a shutout victory against Andre Monti and Carlos Guarin. Bryan Joiner and Eldad Campbell wrapped up the impressive showing with an 8-4 win versus Kalda Kienka and Daniel Vasquez at the No. 2 spot.
In singles, No. 15 Hach quickly provided the team's fourth point with a straight-set 6-1, 6-0 win at the top spot versus Guarin. It was followed shortly after by Joiner's 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 against Vasquez to secure the final team point.
