St. Edward’s dominates play vs. Drury
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- No.15-ranked St. Edward's advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division II Tennis Championships, downing No.20 Drury 5-1 on Wednesday morning at Sanlando Park.
Posting wins at No.1 and No.3 doubles, St. Edward's solidified the match with three consecutive wins during the singles portion.
In doubles, the Hilltoppers' Alexandre Bueno and James Rogers breezed past Jandui Reyes and Carlos Ramos Salazar 8-4. Next, the top-flight tandem of Ned Boone and Mick Walter gave St. Edward's a 2-0 lead as they edged Andy Blair and Sergio Manzanas 8-6. Roman Gonda and Lukas Kriem put Drury back in the contest with a narrow 9-8 (7-3) victory at No.2 doubles against Pedro Bronstrup and Ryan Wiggins.
St. Edward's closed the match with three consecutive wins in singles.
Bronstrup provided the Hilltoppers' third point as he downed Daniel Castelao in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. St. Edward's finished the match via the top two spots as Boone downed Andy Blair 6-3, 6-3 and Walter defeated Gonda 6-4, 6-4 to secure the tournament victory.
