No. 5 Barry downs Abilene Christian
Defending national champions sweep into semifinals
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – No. 5 Barry (21-7) advanced into the semifinals of the 2011 NCAA Division II Tennis Championships as they shut out No. 6 Abilene Christian 5-0 Thursday afternoon from Sanlando Park.
The win advances the Bucs to the semifinal round of the NCAA Tournament where they will take on No. 3 Concordia, Friday morning from Sanlando Park. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
Keeping the Wildcats at bay for the majority of the morning, the Bucs swept through doubles action, before seeing wins at three and six singles.
Completing doubles in order, Barry received their first point of the match from the No. 5-ranked, top flight pair of Emanuel Fraitzl and Max Wimmer as they upended the sixth-ranked team of Hans Hoch and Jake Hendire 8-4. The Buccaneers other nationally ranked tandem, Marco Mokrzycki and Ouentin Vachez, prevailed 8-6 against Bryan Joiner and Eldad Campbell. The No. 3 flight team of Sergio Velez and Ollie Lemaitre wrapped up the doubles portion for the defending national champions with an 8-5 win against Nick Plum and Alfredo Desiati.
Moving into singles, No.36-ranked Mokrzycki made quick work of his opponent, Desiati, dusting him 6-0, 6-1. Romain Costamagna bookended the match for the Buccaneers as he collected a straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 win against John Strahl at the No. 6 spot.
The loss eliminates the Abilene Christian from NCAA Tournament competition.
