AUGUSTA, Ga. — Third-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State opened up its Peach Belt Conference slate with a 9-0 victory against No. 13 Augusta State on Friday afternoon at the Newman Tennis Center.
The Pirates (4-0, 1-0 PBC) remained unbeaten on the year while handing Augusta State (5-1, 0-1 PBC) its first loss of the season.
Armstrong swept all three doubles matches to take a quick 3-0 lead. Georgi Rumenov and Mikk Irdoja bested 20th-ranked Henrique Boturao and Bernardo Fernandes 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, while Daniel Regan and Pedro Scocuglia beat Victor Cabellos and Victor Guimaraes 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. Eudaldo Bonet and Matus Mydla completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win against Maxime Couloumb and Jenner Stevenson.
The Pirates then won in straight sets in all six singles matches for the final 9-0 margin. Rumenov notched a 6-2, 6-1 win against No. 30 Fernandes at No. 1 singles, while No. 2 Bonet beat 36th-ranked Boturao 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. Ninth-ranked Mydla claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Cabellos at No. 3 singles.
Regan knocked off Jan Labas, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 singles for the Pirates while 28th-ranked Scocuglia beat Giumaraes 6-2, 7-5, at No. 5 singles and No. 23 Sven Lalic completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Stevenson at No. 6 singles.
