No. 7 W. Florida slips by No. 2 Barry

Ducros earns wins in singles and doubles action to lead Argos

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — No. 7 West Florida (10-2) upset second-ranked Barry (12-2) 5-4 on Monday afternoon. West Florida’s win snaps a 10-match winning streak for Barry. In singles play, UWF’s Kevin Ducros defeated Marco Mokrzycki, who is the No. 8 singles player in the country.

Barry needed tiebreakers to win two of the three doubles matches. At the No. 2 position, Marco Mokrzycki and Leo Vivas defeated the West Florida doubles tandem of Andrey Pozhidaev and Leandro Ferreira 9-8(2). Ollie Lemaitre and Daniel Schmidt defeated the Argonauts duo of Mike Lue and Domenico Sano 9-8(4) at the No. 3 line.

UWF’s lone victory in doubles came at the No. 1 spot, where Bruno Savi and Kevin Ducros recorded an 8-5 victory against Francisco Sigaud and Romain Costamagna.

Four of the singles matches went into three sets as the Argonauts Florida tallied victories at four of the six positions. Ducros upset No. 8-ranked Mokrzycki in three sets, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4 at the No. 1 line.

No. 10 Savi recorded a straight set, 6-2, 6-2, victory against Fabian Groetsch at No. 2 singles. Pozhidaev, who is currently ranked No. 19 nationally in singles, defeated Costamagna, 6-4, 3-6 7-5, at No. 3. West Florida’s Elio Latela also needed three sets, as he defeated Vivas 6-2, 6-7(1), 6-4 at No. 5.

Barry took victories at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions. At No. 4 Schimdt defeated Ferreira — who is ranked 16th in the nation — 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Lemaitre defeated West Florida’s Sean Gunnels 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
