Columbus St. drops N. Georgia
Cougars open matchup with two loses in doubles play
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – No. 8 Columbus State dropped first singles and doubles but still managed to defeat No. 25 North Georgia 7-2 on Thursday.
In doubles action, Felipe Friedrich and Mateus Camasmie defeated the sixth-ranked duo of Martin Shishkov and Olivier Simonet 7-2 in a tiebreaker to take the match 9-8 for North Georgia's (12-3, 2-2 PBC) first victory.
Quentin Rayniere and Danilo Sardelli got CSU on the board first with an 8-4 victory at second doubles against Mathew Guida and Rodrigo Magan. In the deciding doubles match, Adi Malicbegovic and Michael Trebuhov took down Giovani Santos and Brandon Sloan 8-4.
First singles was also a very entertaining match as Friedrich upset 23rd-ranked Simonet in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 13-11. However, that would be the last match the Saints would win as Rayniere moved up to second singles for the second time this season and defeated Camasmie in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
Shishkov gave the Cougars another victory at third singles winning his match 6-3, 6-4 against Guida.
Columbus State (16-1, 6-0) continued its strong play at fourth singles as Oussama Zoghlami defeated Magan 6-1, 6-0. Sardelli played a closely contested match at fifth singles as he came away with the 7-5, 6-3 victory. In the final match of the day, Trebuhov took down Sloan 6-0, 6-1.
