DENVER, Colo. — Western New Mexico is right where it wants to be as after defeating Metro State 5-1 for the second time this season on Friday.
WNMU (13-9) had to fight in doubles competition, dropping one of the three matches. In the top flight matchup, Metro State came away with the 8-5 victory against Johan Weich and Juan Pablo Fuentes. The Mustangs came back to take the other two matches, with Rodrigo Almeida and Jean Benoit Belin winning 8-4 at No. 2 and Omar Lopez and Roy Ulibarri claiming a 8-5 victory at No. 3 to give WNMU a 2-1 advantage heading into singles action.
In singles, Western New Mexico took the first three matches to end the match. Weich cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Matthieu Covizzi followed suit with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 and at Belin pulled out a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 to clinch the match for the Mustangs.
Two other matches were in progress, with Almeida leading his top flight match 6-4, 2-2 when it was stopped and Fuentes was trailing his match at No. 2 as he dropped the first set 7-6 and was tied 2-2 in the second. Alvaro Nunez at No. 6 had yet to start.
