AMHERST, Mass. — Vassar defeated The College of New Jersey 5-1 in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday afternoon, making history with its first trip to the round of 16.
Vassar took a 2-1 lead after doubles play and picked up three singles points en route to its victory against TCNJ. Brothers Ben Guzick and Andrew Guzick led off with an 8-5 win vs. Stewart Fernandez and Howard Telson at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2, Dan Freeman and Josh Kessler showed fine form in an 8-2 victory against Steven Fernandez and TJ Riley. TCNJ’s lone point came at No. 3 doubles as Marc Nichols and Jordan Cruz gleaned a tight 8-6 win against Nick Jasso and Wilson Platt.
In singles, Andrew Guzick got the ball rolling with a quick 6-1, 6-0 against Steven Fernandez at No. 1 singles to put Vassar ahead 3-1. Kessler carried his doubles dominance into singles with a 6-1, 6-2 vs. Jordan Cruz at No. 6 for a 4-1 lead. Jasso clinched the match for the Brewers with a 7-5, 6-2 win against Stewart Fernandez.
