Armstrong Atlantic tops Queens (N.Y.)
Pirates extends winning streak to 27-matches, drops Knights
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Armstrong Atlantic was tested in doubles against Queens (N.Y.) on Wednesday, but prevailed with a 5-0 win against the Knights to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Men's Tennis Championships.
The Pirates (27-0) advance to face No. 6 Hawaii Pacific -- 5-0 winners against Shaw -- in the Quarterfinals on Thursday.
Armstrong found itself trailing in all three doubles matches against the Knights, but rallied to win all three to take a 3-0 lead. The duo of Eudaldo Bonet and Matus Mydla trailed Queens' duo of Diego Medrano and Jesse Smith, 5-2, before completing an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles. The top-ranked doubles duo of Georgi Rumenov and Mikk Irdoja fought off a late break to beat the No. 16-ranked duo of Atilla Toth and Nikolaj Wulff in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-4).
At No. 2 doubles, No. 17-ranked Sven Lalic and Pedro Scocuglia also faced a late deficit but rallied to win, 9-7, against Claudio Andrade and Tyrone Ewels.
The Pirates then claimed a pair of straight-set singles wins to clinch the match. Daniel Regan defeated Wulff, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6 singles, then No. 12-ranked Mydla bested Andre Pellegrino, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.
