Hawaii Pacific sweeps Shaw
Sea Warriors advance to face Armstrong in quarterfinals
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Hawai'i Pacific met little resistance on Wednesday in the NCAA Division II Round of 16. The No. 6 Sea Warriors (15-4) won 5-0 against Shaw at the Top Gun Tennis Academy.
HPU swept doubles play in order, led by the fourth-ranked duo of Patric Guenther and Petr Michnev. Michnev and Guenther moved to 15-3 with the 8-2 win. Adriano Locorotondo and Georgi Yordanov upended their opponents 8-3 at second doubles. Gerald Moretti and Stephan Weling doubled up the competition with an 8-4 win.
HPU also had little trouble in singles play. Locorotondo turned in a perfect 6-0, 6-0 performance at fifth singles. Michnev closed the match with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win at first singles. In the four unfinished matches, HPU won the first set in everyone.
"We had a bit of a rocky and nervous start today, not having played any matches since the beginning of April, but the guys did a great job playing their way into the match. Once the initial jitters were gone they played well and made it a good start into the tournament," said head coach Hendrik Bode.
"We're excited for tomorrow's matchup against Armstrong. We're obviously the underdog, but that's what's exciting about it. I know the guys will play their hearts out tomorrow and leave everything on the court," said Bode.
