COLUMBUS, Ga.– In the opening match of the season, seventh-ranked Columbus State lost just one set as the Cougars defeated Anderson 9-0 on Sunday. The match took place at the Mary V. Blackmon Tennis Center.
Anderson (0-1) put up a fight in doubles action as the Trojans took five games in two of the three matches. At first doubles, the 10th-ranked duo of Gordan Divljak and Quentin Rayniere took down Jerome Branker and Abdoulaye Camara 8-5. CSU’s easiest match was at second doubles as Olivier Simonet and Oussama Zoghlami defeated Paul Calhoun and Krystof Gulbinovic 8-2. In the final doubles match of the day, Adi Malicbegovic and Danilo Sardelli edged past Daniel Gonzalez and Danilo Faria 8-5.
In singles play, Columbus State (1-0) lost just one set cruising to the 9-0 victory. At the top position, Rayniere defeated Gulbinovic 6-4, 6-3. At the second singles position, 24th-ranked Simonet dropped the first set to Camara before taking the final two sets for the 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory. Divljak had no problem taking down Gonzalez 6-3, 6-4 at third singles.
The final three matches were all Columbus State as Anderson didn’t win more than four games in any of the six sets. At the fourth spot, Sardelli defeated Calhoun 6-1, 6-3 while Zoghlami won 6-2, 6-2 against Ambroise at fifth singles. In the final match of the day, Malicbegovic cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Inaki Iriberry.
