SAVANNAH, Ga. — Top-ranked and defending national champion Armstrong Atlantic remained unbeaten on the year with a 9-0 win against No. 24 Valdosta State on Saturday at Bacon Park.
The Pirates (9-0) did not drop a set in handling the Blazers (2-8), who dropped their third match in a row.
Armstrong swept all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. The top-ranked duo of Dan Regan and Georgi Rumenov beat Konstantin Kutschenko and Mario Navarro 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 9 duo of Sven Lalic and Pedro Scocuglia downed Taamo Haake and Sebastian Jasyk 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Jaan Kononov and Matus Mydla completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win against Andrew Harvin and Joachim Schemm at No. 3 doubles.
The Pirates then swept all six singles matches for the complete sweep. No. 9 Mydla, making his debut for Armstrong at the top singles spot, blanked No. 11 Kutschenko 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. No. 14 Regan downed Schemm 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, while No. 18 Lalic beat Navarro 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
No. 22 Scocuglia upended Jasyk 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, while Pablo Gor notched a 6-4, 6-1 win against Haake at No. 5 singles. Kononov finished singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win versus Harvin at No. 6 singles.
