No. 7 Columbus State breezes past conference foe No. 9 Augusta State
AUGUSTA, Ga -- In the first meeting since their 2012 NCAA tournament third round match, seventh-ranked Columbus State revenged its loss by breezing past ninth-ranked Augusta State 8-1 on Thursday. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at the Newman Tennis Courts.
With the victory, the Cougars improved to 12-1 and 6-1 in PBC play while the Jaguars fell to 8-8 and 3-3 in conference action.
The Cougars lost their only match of the day at first doubles as the 11th-ranked duo of Victor Cabellos and Victor Guimaraes edged past Marco Almorin and Olivier Simonet 8-5. It was another tight match at second doubles, but 10th-ranked Quentin Rayniere and Gordan Divljak came away victorious, taking down Jan Labas and Romain Brunie 9-8.
In the swing match, Michael Trebuhov and Danilo Sardelli won an 8-6 decision against Maxime Coulomb and Kenneth Guy Mooney.
Columbus State swept through singles play to go on for the decisive win. At first singles, 24th-ranked Simonet won his third consecutive match, taking down Cabellos 7-6, 6-2. Divljak won at second singles in a three-set match against Labas 1-6, 6-0, 6-3. Rayniere had an easy match at third singles, knocking off Guimaraes 6-2, 6-3.
At fourth singles, 25th-ranked Almorin took down Brunie 7-6, 6-3 while Sardelli won 6-3, 6-2 against Gustav Anderson at the fifth spot. In the final match of the day, Adi Malicbegovic improved to 11-0 with a 7-6, 6-4 victory against Gustavo D'Ascenzi.
