Top-seeded Armstrong Atlantic defeats Georgia College in Peach Belt tourney
FLORENCE, S.C. -- Top-ranked and top-seeded Armstrong Atlantic earned a berth in the 2013 Peach Belt Conference tournament final with a 5-0 win against fourth-seeded Georgia College on Saturday at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center.
The Pirates (21-1) advance to face the winner of second-seeded Lander and third-seeded Columbus State at noon on Sunday as Armstrong is attempting to win its ninth consecutive league tournament title. Georgia College (18-5) plays in the third-place match on Sunday against the loser of Lander and Columbus State.
Armstrong captured all three doubles matches against the Bobcats to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. The top-ranked duo of Dan Regan and Georgi Rumenov defeated Johan Wadstein and Andreas Ainalides 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, while the sixth-ranked pair of Sven Lalic and Pedro Scocuglia defeated Wictor Andersson and Yannick Hass 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Matus Mydla and Jaan Kononov claimed an 8-2 win against Taylor Powell and Alex Schubert to complete the doubles sweep.
The Pirates then collected straight-set singles wins in two matches to clinch the title match berth. Pablo Gor downed Andersson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles, then fifth-ranked Mydla beat No. 48-ranked Wadstein 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for the match clincher.
