Bluefield State headed to Round of 16 after beating Kutztown 5-0 in Atlantic 1
BLUEFIELD, W. Va. -- The top-seeded and defending Atlantic Region 1 champion Bluefield State is headed to the national championships Round of 16 after a convincing 5-0 victory against fourth-seeded Kutztown on Monday afternoon at Bluefield City Courts.
The Big Blues (21-2) head to Surprise, Ariz., and will match up against No. 3 West Florida in the Round of 16 on May 8.
Bluefield State dominated the Golden Bears (13-7) in doubles play, winning all three matches heading into singles play. The regional top-ranked doubles duo of Jacob Carey and Pitor Kruk defeated Rushi Amin and Varun Desai 8-4 at No. 1 doubles to avenge a loss to Amin and Desai earlier this month while the regionally ranked No. 6 duo of Shikhar Kapur and Vishwesh Sinha cruised to an 8-2 win against Rich Lichtenwalner and Ben Nace in the No. 2 doubles match. Niklass Sparr and Vlad Catlan completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win against Kenny Beebe and Matthew Maguire.
A light rain halted singles play temporarily but the Big Blues maintained their momentum and claimed the two singles wins needed to seal the match. Carey was first to win, picking up a quick 6-2, 6-0 victory against Desai at No. 2 singles, then Sinha beat Amin 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the victory and send Bluefield State to Arizona.
