Hawaii Pacific blanks West Virginia Wesleyan on way to quarterfinals
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Hawaii Pacific met little resistance in the Round of 16 on Wednesday as the Sea Warriors blanked West Virginia Wesleyan (13-6) by the score of 5-0.
The doubles pair of Max Hertl and, ITA West Region Rookie of the Year, Jaume Martinez-Vich started off the match with a bang. The pair had a perfect 8-0 match to put the Sea Warriors in front for good. The other two doubles matches were closer, but neither was a nail bitter for Sea Warrior fans. The seventh ranked team of Petr Michnev and Gerald Moretti won 8-5 at first doubles as Maxime Halflants and Yann Renault doubled up WVW 8-4 at second doubles.
With postseason rules in place, HPU needed just two victories in singles play to win the match. It didn't take long. Adriano Locorotondo just missed perfection with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles. Max Hertl then slammed the door shut with a win by the same count at third singles.
All other Sea Warriors won the first set in their singles match and were leading in the second set before play was halted.
The fifth-ranked Sea Warriors will take on top-ranked Barry on Thursday in the national quarterfinals.
