SURPRISE, Ariz. -- No. 5 Hawaii Pacific lost 5-1 to top-ranked Barry University in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship on Thursday.

The Sea Warriors gave Barry (27-0) a stiff test in doubles play, but could not pull off a victory. The seventh-ranked team of Petr Michnev and Gerald Moretti pushed the second-ranked pair in the nation, Fabian Groetsch and Marco Mokrzycki, but fell 8-6 in No. 1 doubles. Max Hertl and Jaume Martinez-Vich also played well, but met an 8-6 defeat to Romain Costamagna and Leo Vivas in No. 3 doubles.

Barry's 19th-ranked Ollie Lemaitre and Max Wimmer defeated Maxime Halflants and Yann Renault 8-4 in No. 2 doubles.

Barry added another win at fourth singles as Vivas beat Renault 6-0, 6-4. Down 4-0, the Sea Warriors got a victory as 15th-ranked Martinez-Vich defeated No. 26 Max Wimmer in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. However, Barry closed the match with a win at fifth singles as Lemaitre defeated Halflants 7-6, 6-0.

The Sea Warriors closed 2013 with a 19-4 record, a top-five ranking, and an appearance in the national quarterfinals.
