Stevens extends win streak to seven with 5-0 victory against Baruch in first round
WINDSOR, Conn. -- Stevens swept Baruch 5-0 in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship on Thursday.
Stevens improved to 16-7 overall while Baruch ended its season at 13-5. Advancing to the second round for the fourth consecutive year, the Ducks will face No. 22 Mary Washington at 9 a.m. ET Friday.
The Ducks swept through doubles play to lead 3-0 heading into the singles matches. Matthew Heinrich and Chris Rosensteel -- who will play at the NCAA individual championship in two weeks -- took an early 4-0 lead at first doubles while Tyler Tisdale and Derek Smith stayed on serve at 4-3 at third doubles, but Ben Foran and Shota Tasaki fell behind early at No. 2, 1-3. Tisdale and Smith surged ahead to take third doubles 8-3 against Philip Bleustein and David Garzon, and were followed shortly by Heinrich and Rosensteel's 8-1 victory against Danil Ovechkin and Guy Goren. Meanwhile, Foran and Tasaki recovered to record back-to-back breaks and held on to beat Artem Gorbachevskiy and Joe Laskowski 8-4.
Stevens made short work of the singles matches as all four courts took one-set leads, with first through third singles locking up 6-1 wins while Foran won 6-2 at No. 4. Rosensteel sprinted to a 6-0 victory in the second set against Gorbachevskiy to put Stevens within one point of clinching the match, which Foran did with another 6-2 win against Bleustein.
