Amherst opens tournament play with 5-0 second-round victory against TCNJ
AMHERST, Mass. -- Third-ranked Amherst opened its 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship run Friday morning with a 5-0 second-round victory against The College of New Jersey. Sweeping doubles play, the Jeffs picked up wins at first and third singles to advance to the Round of 16.
Making quick work of their counterparts at third doubles, Amherst’s Joey Fritz and Justin Reindel cruised to an 8-1 win against Jordan Cruz and Pierce Cooper. The Jeffs’ Mark Kahan and Michael Solimano followed suit with an 8-2 triumph against Marc Nichols and Howard Telson at first doubles to improve to 6-3 on the year.
Playing together for much of the fall, the Jeffs' pairing of Andrew Yaraghi and Ben Fife moved to 10-2 on the year by edging out TCNJ's TJ Riley and Jack August 8-6 to complete the doubles sweep.
Breezing past August, 6-1, 6-1 at third singles, Yaraghi gave the Jeffs a commanding 4-0 lead while extending his win streak to seven. Having last lost on April 6 to Bates’ Timmy Berg, Yaraghi is now 19-4 on the season. Putting the finishing touches on Amherst’s shutout, Fritz picked up identical 6-3 wins against Nichols at first singles.
Amherst (28-8) will meet Stevens in third-round action on Saturday, while TCNJ closed out the year with a 15-2 record.
