WACO, Texas – Baylor’s third-ranked women’s tennis team (1-0) won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches to defeat the University of Houston (0-1) 6-1 on Friday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
“I was really pleased with the way we performed tonight,” head coach Joey Scrivano said. “The top of our lineup is really rock-solid. Sona and Diana played extremely well today. Our top four are really strong at this point.”
The Lady Bears won two of the doubles matches by at least six games, but lost the third match in a long battle 8-7 (8-6). On court one, the duo of Sona Novakova and Diana Nakic cruised to a 8-2 victory, while Jelena Stanivuk and Nina Secerbegovic took an 8-1 victory on court two.
In singles, senior Stanivuk cruised in straight-sets 6-1, 6-1, against Houston’s Jo Garvey, while 40th-ranked Nina Secerbegovic defeated Girogia Pozzan to open 2011, 6-0, 6-4.
Baylor performed just as well from the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Nakic won in consecutive sets, 6-1, 6-0, against Dionne Sanders, and 19th-ranked Novakova defeated Bryony Hunter, 6-0, 6-2. On court six, Aya Bara won easily against Maja Kazimier 6-3, 6-0.
